5. Convert your face-to-face product into a successful online learning experience

Initially a Live Webinar (now a fully resourced lesson):

Convert your face-to-face product into a successful online learning experience

If you’re a practitioner or a subject matter expert in your field, there’s a fair chance you’ve delivered the same workshop or training over and over again and you’re a bit over it. You’re ready to have it digitalised, so the same message can go out repeatedly to whoever wants and needs it - without you having to physically deliver it every single time. Hallo time, energy and money savings!

If you’ve given it a go, you’ve probably found that recording your PowerPoint without an audience to interact with, just doesn’t have the same impact and you have no idea how to convert what is usually super engaging, motivating and client focused, into an online or digital version that will pack the same punch.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • the difference between self study, live online and face to face training - and which option is best for you and your clients;
  • how technology is changing the way we learn - and what your clients expect from you as a subject matter expert;
  • the foundations of best practice teaching and learning - and how to apply them to any learning experience
  • how to structure engaging training sessions with action based outcomes;
  • create effective visual aids and workbooks; and
  • Use delivery techniques that result in knowledge retention and action taking,

giving you the knowledge required to adopt best practice teaching practices regardless of the platform you are using to deliver your content.

Choose the sections that speak to you!

Originally, this lesson was a webinar with a live audience. Now it's a series of 8 videos, which all focus on a different set of objectives. Play them all from start to finish, or choose the sections that speak to you.

Time to watch?

You'll get a lot more from watching the slides while you listen to the presentation.

Before you take this lesson, please note:

  • Make sure you download the workbook before you listen to or watch any of the resources. Read through the  Workbook before you begin and make yourself familiar with the questions - note down any answers you know already, and compare them to what you learn in the webinar.
  • The numbers in brackets after the sections in each lesson, is the time that section starts on that video/audio.
  • The polls mentioned in the below video series were 'live' on the original webinar video, and the results are not visible on the screen as they weren't captured on the recording.
  • The offer you hear is periodically on throughout the year, and because you're a member of the Library you will automatically receive notifications when it's on.

Still got questions after watching all the videos?

I'm doing a series of LIVE Q&A sessions, for any other questions that relate to how to get your face to face content online. Don't be shy, ask away!

4. Introduction to Foundations

With the:

4. Introduction to the Foundations of Adult Learning

You will gain an insight into the 4 stages of quality content creation, and an overview of the FOUNDATIONS Level of this Library.

Little teaching or training qualifications and need a quick crash course? 20 years teaching and training experience, in easy to digest, 4 self paced, outcomes based e-Courses. Engage with the INTRODUCTION MODULE below, and decide whether the full e-Courses, on the FOUNDATIONS of Best Practice Teaching and Learning, is for you.

The Pre-Reading Task will give you a brief overview of the FOUNDATIONS Level of this Library if you don't have time to engage with all the learnings in this lesson.

Welcome to the Introduction to the

FOUNDATIONS Level of the Library;

the 4 Pillars e-Courses, which summarise the:

the Foundations of Best Practice Teaching Learning

The materials in this lesson will provide you with the tools and resources you need to start creating 5 star quality learning experiences for your clients. Straight up, if you've already engaged with all the lessons in the Welcome Gifts and this Starter Pack, go straight down the bottom and read the Course Outline, and do the Pre-Course Survey.

Otherwise, for your own benefit, please read on.

Here's a quick overview of the FOUNDATIONS e-Courses. There are two distinct parts to Best Practice Teaching and Learning: Product and Curriculum Development, which is all about creating an organised, well scaffolded, needs and outcomes based product that caters to your clients' learning styles and expectations; and Teacher Training, which is about taking that well organised content, making it engaging, inspiring and motivating, and continuously improving it every time you deliver it.

But before you get started,

I realised after I had launched these e-Courses, there was a whole heap of business type lessons missing; questions and issues that need to be addressed BEFORE you start creating any content, which I had assumed most of my clients would have worked through with their business coaches or web developers. As most of them hadn't, we started working through the issues one by one together, and as a result, this Starter Pack, and the Small Business Wisdom Courses were born.

The rest of the materials in the Welcome Gifts and this Starter Pack have been designed to help you get started on the right foot, BEFORE you create any content, and I highly recommend that you engage with these lessons first. If not, you might find yourself in the same position as some of my clients found themselves in - creating great content that wasn't a good fit for them, or their clients, thereby re-creating the 9-5 nightmare they'd worked so hard to extricate themselves from!

The Welcome Gifts have been designed to help you:

  1. Assess your content creation skills and help you decide exactly which Lessons and Courses in the Library you will benefit from,
  2. Gain an understanding of the 12 Step, or 4 PILLAR process behind Creating Quality Learning Experiences, and
  3. Systemise and sell your expertise with a simple 6 step process.

If you haven't already engaged with these lessons, please go and complete them first. You can find them easily by clicking on the links in this paragraph, or using the menu on the top left hand corner of this page.

gold-divider

Then you'll be ready for what's in this Starter Pack...

It's imperative that if you're going to put the time and effort into creating quality content, that you're:

  1. Creating offerings based on your strengths,
  2. Creating offerings that work for you AND your clients,
  3. Planning based on the 12 steps of quality learning experiences,
  4. Deciding what stages of the content development process to outsource or DIY, and that you're
  5. Choosing the most effective delivery platform for your content.

These are the other lessons in this Starter Pack and I highly recommend doing these lessons first, before you engage with the FOUNDATIONS level. Again, you can access these lessons easily by clicking on the links or using the menu in the top left hand corner of this page.

gold-divider

Then, you'll be ready for the next Level...

Once you've finished those lessons, you'll be ready for the FOUNDATIONS Level, which takes you through the 4 PILLARS of Creating Quality Learning Experiences:

  1. CONNECT: Product Development
  2. CREATE: Curriculum Development
  3. COMMUNICATE: Delivery Skills
  4. CRITIQUE: Continuous Improvement

I see so many clients reinvesting double the effort, money and time unnecessarily, because they fail to do the proper pre-planning that the BASICS Level will help you do. I highly recommend doing this comparatively small amount of due diligence, before you start, so the content creation process is efficient and most effective for you and your clients!

Before you start the FOUNDATIONS level, please complete the Pre-Course Survey. This will help me gain a better understanding of who you are, and what you need, which all good educators should do before their learners start working with them. Please also read through the Course Outline below, which should answer any FAQs you have about the materials or the various ways you can get support if you need it.

The e-Course (or the FOUNDATIONS Level) has been designed to be used in order, from Lesson 1.0 right through to Lesson  4.4 so for the best experience possible, follow that order!

gold-divider

So how does the e-Course work?

Find out by engaging with the Course Outline, which will help you understand what to expect from the FOUNDATIONS level (the e-Course). If you want a brief, 5 minute video that takes you though the each of the 4 PILLARS, please view the Four Part Video Series in the Welcome Gifts, which you also have access to as a Starter Pack Member.

COURSE OUTLINE

Decide which resources you need!

There are a lot of different resources in each module, but you don't need to use them all. I provide resources for all types of learners - so choose the ones that resonate with you and your learning situation.

I, for one, never use the the transcripts because I prefer watching tutorials, or at least listening to people discuss topics. Having said that though, if I'm pushed for time I'll have a quick skim through the transcripts so I know whether it's worth my time or not! Everyone's different so choose the materials that are right for you!

Not sure what to do first?

Always download the Worksheet or Template first, and make yourself familiar with the outcomes and tasks that the lesson is going to help you achieve. No point engaging in more materials than you need to, right?

You have a few options for doing this Challenge!

You can

a) just watch all the 2 minute videos below,

b) listen to all the podcasts (right down the bottom of the page) or

c) do the Challenge on Udemy, which is an online learning platform.

Why do it on Udemy?

Well, it's a chance for you to experience learning on a completely different platform which is free for you, as the content creator, to use. If you're serious about getting your content online, there are a myriad of platforms to use and if you do the Challenge on Udemy, you'll have had the change to experience my content on two different platforms, which will be a great platform (pardon the pun) from which to start our discussions about YOUR content, and how you want to deliver it.

I've had nearly 3000 people do the FREE 12 Step Challenge on Udemy, but as it's now a paid offering, I'm offering members of the Library a chance to do the Challenge AND receive a Strategy Session with me - for less than the cost of a simple cafe lunch. Contact me if you'd like more details.

Just want to dive into the Challenge?

Print out the 12 Step Blueprint above, then dive into the videos below!

Please note that these videos were originally created for a live experience, so in every video I ask you to 'go into the Facebook Group and share' how you're going to use each point of the Challenge, to improve your content. If you need help or inspiration, please post your questions or comments in this private Facebook community for Members of the Library.

Let's get started...

The basics of best practice teaching and learning can be broken down into 12 simple steps, that can be grouped into 4 areas, or PILLARS. The 4 PILLARS are Connect, Create, Communicate and Critique - and there are 3 steps in each of them. If you're still not sure whether you really need to do this challenge, watch this brief introductory video, before you get started. All videos in the Challenge are around the 2 minute mark.

WATCH VIDEO: 2 MINS

gold-divider

Let's start with the first PILLAR:  CONNECT, or

Product Development

When you fail to really identify your client needs, the different ways people learn, and the exact expectations around the full user experience, you open yourself up to refund requests, mismatched expectations and a minefield of 'but I thought I was getting X' type complaints.

Be prepared. Be prepared to create a learning experience that gets raving reviews, touts you as a life changing expert and truly changes lives. Plan it properly and get it right the first time.

STEP 1: What problem are you solving?

STEP 2: How can you cater for more learning styles?

STEP 3: How clear are the expectations for your product?

Inspired? There's a whole course dedicated to Product Development in the Library.

On to the second PILLAR:  CREATE, or

Curriculum Development

So many clients come to me in confusion and overwhelm because they have created so much content, but have no idea how it all fits together, no idea where anything is, their filing system is an endless rabbit warren of duplicate information and they've totally lost the love with it. All of it. All that hard work, and they've created themselves a monster. Don't do this to yourself.

Forget feeling overwhelmed, confused and out of your depth. Create a system that will keep you organised, and will give you a complete picture of your content, your resources and the marketing language you'll need to pitch it to your ideal clients.

STEP 4: What outcomes will your clients have?

STEP 5: What does your learning journey look like?

STEP 6: What systems are keeping your content organised?

Inspired? There's a whole course dedicated to Curriculum Development in the Library.

Now for the third PILLAR: COMMUNICATE, or

Delivery Skills

Before you start anything, if you have 2 minutes, check out this video ... no one wants to be the Dander 500 Guy... right? The presenter who makes everyone fall asleep, snigger under their breath or walk away warning others not to waste their time with you.... This short course is going to show you how to avoid being that presenter! Dander 500 Guy video used with permission from the gorgeous guys at brainrules.net

STEP 7: How well is your presentation structured?

STEP 8: How can you improve your visual aids?

STEP 9: What part of your delivery skills do you need to work on?

Inspired? There's a whole course dedicated to Delivery Skills in the Library. Check it out here.

The capstone of quality learning: CRITIQUE, or

Continuous Improvement

No one wants to be THAT trainer. The one who is stuck in their ways, who recycles the same content over and over, who bores the socks off every group of people that comes before them to learn.

We've all been there, in that classroom, thinking 'gee I'd love to give this guy some feedback but I'm assuming it will just fall on deaf ears so there's probably no point'... right? Don't be that presenter. The capstone to any quality learning experience, is Continuous Improvement. Learn the basics about how to Evaluate, Review and Reflect on your Learning Experiences here.

STEP 10: How often do you ask for feedback on your product?

STEP 11: How often do you revamp or review your materials?

STEP 12: How can you continually improve your processes?

Inspired? There's a whole course dedicated to Continuous Improvement in the Library.

5 QUICK TRAINING TIPS

1. Assess your content creation skills

Welcome! To a new, interactive way of learning.

We're in the process of completely revamping our online Library - and to start with, we've got a fully updated Introductory Course that contains 6 Self Assessment Tools. Each of the tools asks you a series of questions that will help you work out which courses are most suited to your needs.

Click on 'START COURSE' below, and follow the prompts!

Please note: if you'd prefer a more traditional way to learn, scroll down below the course - where you can still download our Content Creation Checklist and do our Quiz - the Quiz will set off a personalised email sequence for you; based on what you ask for more information on!

Content Creation Checklist & Quiz

You will learn how to assess your preparedness for embarking on the Content Creation journey.  Never done this before? Don't worry - I hear you! I work with people like you every day and the sheer amount of moving parts you have to have in sync to make this happen efficiently (while keeping your sanity), can be really overwhelming. It doesn't have to be though.

Not sure you need either?

Engage with the Pre-Reading Task and decide for yourself!

12 Points to Consider Before Creating Content

DOWNLOAD THE CHECKLIST

Want to get stuck into learning immediately?

  • Download the CONTENT CREATION CHECKLIST
  • Answer the questions honestly, and then follow the links to the lessons you need.
  • This is a downloadable PDF - answers WILL NOT SAVE if you simply open in the browser.
  • Download and save to your desktop or folder, so you are working on a saved copy.

Want a steadier approach, and a personalised learning plan?

Do the Content Creation Quiz. The questions are identical to the ones in the Checklist, but you'll also receive an email once every 4 days, that will help you with the questions you've answered No or Not Sure to - (the areas you specifically need help with).

5. Choose between SEO, SEM and SMO

With the:

5. Interviews with Kate Toon and Lauren Hotson

You will learn how to differentiate between the search engine and social media strategies, and choose the best solution for you and your business.

No idea what you need? I didn't either - until I worked with Lauren and then recently did Kate Toon's Recipe for SEO Success Course.

Kate has given us a quick outline on what we need to know as small business owners wanting to get the most out of our SEO, and Lauren gave us a longer interview which explained the differences between SEO, SEM and SMO.

Read about how I went from being completely in denial, to confident and reassured I knew exactly what I needed, with the Pre-Reading Task.    All Lauren's notes we talk about in the interview, are summarised on her website in the 'SMO EXPLAINED CLEARLY' Extra Reading article.

Still want more?

In this interview with Michelle Millichip from 2016, we explore the technical requirements you may need to consider when working with a web developer to create a fully customised membership site on your own website. Please note, some information may now be outdated, but the questioning process and points to consider are still relevant if you're looking at building your own self hosted site.

The DEMYSTIFYING THE DELIVERY DEBACLE Worksheet will help you work out the what, who, where, when and how in regards to the delivery your content. If you can't answer those questions, it's very difficult to make sensible decisions about how to get your content online efficiently and effectively.

The MEMBERSHIP SITE REQUIREMENTS Worksheet really breaks down all the questions you'll need to answer before a developer can help you work out the right combinations of plug ins and technical requirements you'll need to get your content delivered - be that on a hosted platform, or your very own customised membership site.

3. Be Realistic About What it Takes to Systemise and Sell your Expertise

Tutorial, Content Organising Tool plus a fully resourced Live Webinar

You will collate and package your existing knowledge into a range of educational products and services, then have the reality of promoting and selling spelt out for you in a 1 hour webinar with Q&A from a live audience.

Not sure you need this lesson? Have a quick read of the Pre-reading here.

TASK 1: Content Development Made Easy

Why do you need the Content Organising Tool?

You've got a lot of experience working one on one with clients and you KNOW the best way to leverage that is to put it into some sort of group learning experience.  You know you have enough to create a product out of, but you're confused, frustrated and have no idea where to start.

Follow this simple 6 step process to organise, systemise  and package your content. The Tutorial and Content Organising Tool will walk you through the process so that you can start taking action immediately - get that content out of your head and into a variety of learning products that you can promote, package and sell.

Why do you need the Live Webinar?

I specifically did a 6 month case study, promoting 4 of my online courses, so that I could catalogue the time, cost and effort it takes to have an online social media presence that delivers consistent value to your ideal clients. The short story? A LOT. The webinar takes you through all the work that is involved and how long it takes you to either do it yourself or have it outsourced to a professional who knows what they're doing. You'll meet Ilana Van Geijn, my right hand woman, who does most of this for me. You want the truth? You get the truth in this webinar - the true costs of what it takes to systemise and promote your expertise.

Still not convinced the system I use works for your content?

Engage with the Pre-Reading Task: Content Development Made Easy and see the range of industries I work with.

The second Pre-Reading Task summarises the 6 step system I use to Systemise and Sell your Expertise.

The True Costs of Systemising and Selling Your Expertise

One strategy for selling yourself online, is to create a webinar that will ‘sell' people into your program, online course or coaching services.

A lot of clients come to me with this idea in mind, and are completely overwhelmed when they try to start putting together all the marketing material - because the truth is, there’s a LOT to think about - and there are a lot of professionals out there making it look super slick, simple and straightforward.

If you’ve given it a go, there's a chance you have found yourself feeling like a bit of a floundering failure - how do they make it look so easy when you have spent so much time, put in all this effort, and still don't really have all the pieces of the puzzle you need - and to be honest, you're not even quite sure what is missing and what you actually need to be doing?!

I want to share with a case study, which Ilana van Geijn I worked on over a 6 month period, to help you understand the steps, time, skill level and effort involved so when you are putting together your next launch strategy you can systematically work your way through the to-do list and successfully sell yourself online like a pro.

In this lesson you will learn how to:

  • set realistic goals and expectations around creating and promoting your next webinar
  • systemise and prepare your content to best promote your product
  • prepare the marketing material you need for pre, during and post your webinar
  • repurpose your webinar content for your website, program, online course or coaching services.

giving you the knowledge required to systematically put together a webinar to launch your online content with ease - and to then repurpose the material for future use and promotion.

1. Outcomes Based Product Development

Understanding what your clients need, and how they learn best, will enable you to create courses, workshops and information products that deliver on their outcomes. When clear expectations are set, and outcomes are achieved, your raving fans will be letting the world know about it - and when you don't? Well, they'll be letting the world know about it too - which would you prefer?

The first part in this mini-series outlines why you need to CONNECT with your clients or learners - and how doing so will improve their learning experience. It's all about the basics of how adults learn and why you should be incorporating these ideas into the way you design and deliver your materials.

2. Curriculum and Content Development

We've all sat through presentations or courses that are disorganised and poorly structured - not particularly inspiring is it? Neither is it engaging or motivating.. right?

The second part in our mini-series is all about how to create materials, resources, modules and whole courses that will get your clients or learners RESULTS. It's about structuring content in a way that will help your clients or learners achieve success by building on what they already know, and achieving their goals.

3. Delivery Skills and User Experience

No body wants to be that boring presenter that sends the room to sleep, or has the audience slowly disengaging, checking phones, yawning or leaving early #disaster...

The third part in our mini-series demonstrates how to make your materials engaging - be they the worksheets or activities themselves, or the way you deliver them, there's a few different aspects you need to consider.

4. Continuous Improvement

Evaluating, reviewing and reflecting on your content so that your clients get a better experience every time, and leave you with more raving reviews every time you deliver your content. Unless of course you'd prefer to be known as that teacher who just recycles the same content over, and over, and over....

The final part in our mini-series is all about getting results - and making sure you get double the number next time round. Whether that's RESULTS for your clients or raving reviews, there are 4 simple ways to make sure you get better results - every time.
