4.4 Guest Expert on evaluations and review: Claire Richardson

Learn how to get the most out of the evaluation and review process as a commitment to best practise in learning.

For this course, we had Claire Richardson, talking with us about the power of Evaluation, Review and Reflection. Claire is a lecturer at the University of Adelaide, and has been a marketing manager and consultant for the last 15 years. She's currently developing an app at www.speechreview.com where people can video themselves doing presentations and have experts review them and provide feedback.

We discussed the power of evaluation, review and reflection - something she feels so strongly about, she's thrown away her corporate career to pursue a business that is based on the power of it, and how it can change lives. If not, check out the other resources in this Welcome Gifts course!

With the lesson on:

4.2 Review

You will learn how to deal with, and implement, all pieces of feedback, however good, bad or ugly they may be.

What to do with all the evaluations... might not sound like rocket science but a lot of professionals ask for feedback, and then simply never do anything with it because it ends up in the 'too hard' basket.

Learn some simple methods for dealing with all pieces of feedback. Use the GOLD that your clients give you, to improve your content and wow the next set of clients who engage with it.

There are three main parts to this course, and it will be delivered a little differently to the other courses in this FOUNDATIONS level.

Why?

As an experiment in different learning styles and course delivery techniques, I’ve specifically not created a video for Lessons 4.1 and 4.2. If you haven't read through the Worksheet for 4.1 Evaluation, you won't have the full story.   So if you haven't already engaged with the Worksheet, it's right on this page - download it, read the first few pages - it's all revealed there!

Yep, this Course practices what it preaches!

If you'd like to access the final lesson in this Course, you'll need to provide me with some feedback! Follow this link, or click on the 'GET STARTED' button below, fill in the survey, and you'll get access to the final lesson instantly!

Make sure you engage with all the lessons in this course before giving feedback too, so you can give me the best feedback possible. Remember there's Lesson 4.4, the interview with our Guest Speaker Claire Richardson too!

Thanks in advance - and I hope you enjoy Lesson 4.3 Reflection - which really does change lives!

4.1 Evaluation

With the lesson on:

4.1 Evaluation

You will learn how to guarantee you’ll get constructive feedback from your clients before, during and after they have taken their learning journey with you.

Why should you bother? Because in this way you can review their experience in light of their original starting position, and how they finished.

It also allows you to review their feedback in context of how they performed as your client – which will allow you to make judgements on the quality of the comments, and whether you believe them to be ‘valid’ enough to make changes in your course or not. This lesson will show you many different ways you can easily gather evaluations from your clients.

3.3 Delivery and Presentation Skills

You will learn how to confidently use ninja delivery techniques to ensure your clients are interacting with you, and perched on the edge of their seats wanting more.

The three main components of delivering a killer presentation, and here's a hint - it has nothing to do with whether you're a born entertainer. What's more important - your content or your confidence with speaking to a group? If you've got great content (but not a lot of speaking confidence), you'll end up sounding like a boring lecturer.

If you've got great speaking confidence but you're not really sure about your content, you'll come across as an entertainer (who doesn't really know what they're talking about). Finding that sweet spot is the key, and this lesson will give you all the tips on how to go about it.

3.2 Engaging visual aids

You will learn how to avoid death by PowerPoint by creating visual aids that enhance and help you while you’re presenting.

You don't need to be that presenter. Join me in saving the world from more pointless torture!   Once you've mastered the art of a good visual aid, you'll also want to learn how to create batches of them so you're working as efficiently as possible. BATCHING VIDEOS EFFICIENTLY

Sanity Saver!

If you're trying to create professionals videos, there's one thing you really have to learn how to do.

Laugh at yourself. Honestly.

While I was producing the video content for my online courses in Bali, I decided I was going to have to put together a blooper reel to expose the not so perfect side of video making. It looks so easy when you see the final products but you know what? It really isn't.

With all the cutting, editing and adjusting that needs to be done to produce 3-4 hours of solid, quality video content, I was going a bit mad so decided to do something that would make at least me laugh - which it did - hop you get a good giggle out of it too!

3.1 Structuring your presentations

With the lesson on:

3.1 Structuring your presentations

Learn how to pique your clients interest and hold their attention right to the end of your presentation, rather than have them drop off out of boredom.

It's not just about having an introduction and a conclusion, it's about setting up the learning experience so your clients are engaged, inspired and motivated to get to the end of your presentation - and a lot of that, is not about whether you're a born entertainer...

In fact, changing up the structure, can help you avoid telling your clients things they already know, wasting their time and generally making them wonder why they're even working with you. Even with exactly the same content, the way you structure the lead in and the wrap up can have completely the opposite effect on your clients.

Lesson 3.1 is the lesson that specifically deals with how to structure presentations that work, but if you're looking for general tips on how to make webinars, tutorials or any kind of presentation engaging, check out the Pre-Reading task.

Join us for a live Masterclass that Maria delivered for Round 2 of Jay Crisp Crow's 2019 copywriting course - Crisp Copy. Maria takes you through, in detail, the 7 core sections that every presentation should include, if you want your clients to learn something, and walk away ready to take action with their new knowledge.

0.00-2.22: Introduction and how the Masterclass will work

2.23-5.39: How much do you already know about what language is important when building out the sections of your presentations? How much is enough/too much? What order should the sections be in? What about outcomes or objectives - are they important? Are you teaching or curating?

05.40-8.59: What happens when the language you use is 'off'? Detailed examples of what happens when

09.00 - 10.34: What happens when the language is structured well and chosen carefully?

10.35-11.47: The Activity: the 7 sections of a presentation that will be a quality learning experience: Why they're important, How you apply those ideas to your presentation or course.

11.48-14.24: What is the 'right' language? Structure, systems, Bloom's Taxonomy.

14.25-17.12: Section 1: Pre-test. The importance of finding your learners' pre-existing knowledge.

17.13: Section 2: Motivate. Using pain and gain points, showing the consequences of applying or not applying the knowledge they're about to learn.

19.33-21.34: Section 3: Outline: The importance of learners knowing what journey they're going on in your presentation. The magical number of bull.

21.35 Section 4-22.49: Theory: How much is too much? How to know exactly how much theory to give, to ensure they've got enough but are not overwhelmed.

22.50-24.50: Section 5: Demonstration: Using real life examples to really drive your theory home.

24.50-26.55: Section 6: Action: Getting your learners to APPLY their new knowledge, not just digest it. More on how to know how much to give your learners in any one presentation.

26.55-28.55: Section 7: Reflection: using the Pre-test to really cement how much your learners have learnt during the session.

28.55-32.47: Final thoughts: wrapping it all up, based on age old quotes from Benjamin Franklin and Khalil Gibran. Using action based outcomes, using questions instead of lecturing, and the time it takes to create a quality learning experience.

32.48-37.00: What's next? A simple solution for structuring all your presentations, and how that formula can spell out a range of offerings all based on your core knowledge and skills.

37.00-39.00: The importance of offering support: (group or one to one) when creating an online course, library or learning experience.

CONTENT AND TASK PLANNING INSTRUCTIONS

Content and Task Planners

Use which ever Content and Task Planner feels easier for you. Often my clients get very overwhelmed with the Excel Version - so use which ever feels better and if all else fails, map out the process onto large pieces of butcher's paper and use post it notes to move things around until it's all in the right order!

EXCEL VERSION

WORD VERSION

If you're more of a GOOGLE SHEET kinda person, here's the latest version for you: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1REmNFmKwpjatBlJJcEBvdJCUW4Jmgiuk65Le9xKY2rs/edit?usp=sharing

You'll need to 'save as' an excel document, then upload into your Google Drive folder. It's a much cleaner and easier version to work with I think!

Want to learn about how I use this system to market my content?

Summary of Key Topics (with timing indications):

0-6.45: Introduction: summary of what we're going to cover, questions that are going to be answered, how to interact during the tutorial and introductions

6.45 - 10.15: The key to creating a curriculum that works: how product design and curriculum development are linked - how you cannot build a curriculum without understanding what your learning product is and how it works - a list of things to think about how your learning product works BEFORE you start building the curriculum.

10.15 - 11.58: What this masterclass will give you: how the content and task planner will answer the often asked question: how do you know how much content to give (how to know whether it's not enough or too much) - especially when you're trying to distill your knowledge into a 5 day challenge or free lead generation type / opt in learning resource? Then a slight glitch - nothing like live tutorials to test your tech patience!

11.58 -16.00: What is the Content and Task Planner? - quick overview if you haven't done all the tutorials in the Curriculum Development Course, and how the columns give you everything you need for your blogs, articles or challenges - without giving away too much of your knowledge.

16.00-31.30: Working through the Content and Task Planner of a bookkeeper - who is distilling her knowledge into an online course and 5 day challenge. Using what she has put into her columns, and finessing the language to come up with major and minor outcomes, and the content she'll need for her challenge (as opposed to the whole course). Also looking at whether the activities or tasks she has outlined, match the outcomes she's stated learners will get from that module of work.

31.30-35.36: Using the Content and Task Planner to work out what goes into your sales funnel: (from lead generators, to opt ins, to self selecting quizzes, trust-building through to sales). How to work out what to put in a 5 day challenge (without overwhelming your learners) - using your outcomes to make questions that can be answered in a quiz, a challenge, (using content from a social media marketing professional) - if there are up to 50 outcomes, which ones to use, and how to use some to create motivation for your learners to want to learn more from you (ie progress along your sales funnel).

35.36-40.15: Using 'Test Teach Test' and Scaffolding to engage and motivate your learners. How to use the language within the planner to structure your learning experiences so people are impressed by what they learnt from you (not frustrated by how much they already knew or how little they learnt). How to use questions to build trust with your learners - so they can self-select into your courses or challenges with integrity.

40.15 - 56.00: Q&A from participants

  • 40.15: how to avoid using the word 'understand' when writing outcomes, by focusing on the actions, not the theory or information you're providing
  • 42.45: lecturing and why it's not the best way to deliver learning experiences - an alternative strategy to lecturing that uses the Test Teach Test principle and questioning techniques
  • 50.50: how professionals often try to put too much into one lesson and overwhelm learners, because they are subject matter experts and forget how little base knowledge the learners have - how to combat this, and how to tackle the planner head on!
  • 54.04: advice for professionals who believe they don't have an outcomes based course (in this case, a personal development professional) - that it's more theory based and doesn't lend itself to 'outcomes', 'activities' or 'tasks' - if they're not able to use the information you're teaching them, why are you teaching it?

2.2 Scaffolding

With the lesson on:

2.2 Scaffolding

You will learn how to layer the learning experience, so your clients can immediately use their new knowledge and create real change in their own lives.

It's not just about putting modules or lessons in the right order. It's about understanding how adults learn, and how they learn most effectively by being lead through a learning journey that piques their interest, then keeps them engaged, eager to find out more and get excited about the benefits they'll see when they apply their new knowledge.

I often get asked 'how much content is too much content?' when clients are trying to put together their presentations, workshops or courses. The answer is simple, and will be very clear to you once you've done the Pre-Reading.

2.1 Outcomes Based Modules of Training

You will learn how to create discrete modules of learning that have client centered, realistic goals to work towards.

It's no secret that when there's no goal to work towards, information can easily fly straight over the top of your learners' heads. Give them a concrete goal to reach, mission to accomplish, task to complete, and they'll be more motivated to apply their new knowledge and see the benefits faster. Information without application really, is, not particularly useful!   The other downside is that if you don't have clear goals to begin with, there's a fair chance you'll end up with nasty reviews. 1.3 Setting Clear Expectations

You will learn how to design a learning experience that sets clear expectations, and minimises refunds and complaints.

And when  you don't? Hold your hats. A myriad of complaints and miscommunications over what people thought they were getting, and all that leads to is your reputation getting a name for itself that in all honesty, you don't really deserve. 1.2 Learning styles and educational theories

With the Lesson on:

1.2 Learning Styles and Educational Theories

You will learn how to design content that will appeal to the broadest range of clients, by catering for various learning styles and multiple intelligences.

There are a multitude of different learning styles, and sometimes our preferences change depending on what it is that we're learning. I'd much prefer to watch someone doing something mechanical like changing a tyre, before giving it a go myself, but with cooking? Hand me a recipe and let me work it out for myself! Do you know the preferred learning styles of your clients, for your content? Or are you delivering content that is otherwise brilliant, in a mode that they're simply not interested in?

If you've heard that Learning Styles may have gone out of fashion lately (lots of articles floating around saying not to bother with them), I suggest you have a read of the Pre-Reading Task. They're definitely still a thing, the way they've been interpreted has just changed slightly!

Engaging the Intelligences

Once you've discovered your learner's individual mix of strengths, you can begin tailoring your teaching methods. There are a number of ways to accomplish this, but it helps to begin with an overview of general strategies for engaging each intelligence. This link is provided courtesy of LiteracyNet.org

1.1 Client profiling

WITH THE LESSON ON:

1.1 Client Profiling for Needs Based Learning

You will learn how to get inside your clients' heads, so that you can plan for their needs by incorporating their specific circumstances, including educational backgrounds and industry experience.

What happens when you don't, is that you start creating content for problems you THINK they have, or that you may have had when YOU were going through the same process, but 5 years on, the landscape has completely changed so pitching the same, or trying to solve the same problems still, is completely missing the mark. You may also find that you're telling them things they already know, insulting their intelligence and generally rubbing them up the wrong way.

Engage with the Pre-Reading Task if you don't believe me! It has links to a raft of examples how I learnt the hard way; how not knowing who your clients really are, can lead to disaster in terms of building rapport and respect. If you've been wanting to have a good laugh at someone else's misfortune (mine), this would be a good time 🙂 You'll also hopefully learn some pearler cultural facts that you didn't already know about people from the Asia Pacific region!

4.0 Introduction

An Introduction to Continuous Improvement

An overview of the three parts of this module which include Evaluation, Review and Reflection - the three key ingredients to continuously improving your content and delivery.

No one wants to be THAT trainer. The one who is stuck in their ways, who recycles the same content over and over, who bores the socks off every group of people that comes before them to learn.  We've all been there, in that classroom, thinking 'gee I'd love to give this guy some feedback but I'm assuming it will just fall on deaf ears so there's probably no point'... right?

be the change

What will you learn?

In this module we're going to discuss how to continuously improve your content and delivery by evaluating, reviewing and reflecting. What this helps you do, is become better at delivering your content every time, as you learn and grow from the feedback that you get from your clients. Please note that you may have already seen these introductory materials on the course home page. If so, skip straight to Lesson 4.1 Evaluation.

Please note that originally the FOUNDATIONS Level was an e-Course; therefore in the tutorials I may refer to Courses as 'Modules', and 'weeks' of the course, which refer to the 4 different Courses that are now housed in the FOUNDATIONS Level.

How to teach an old dog new tricks.

Now called "Is 'Learning Styles' a myth that has finally been debunked? this article not only addresses that question, but also the power of scaffolding the learning experience.

Life after Death by Powerpoint 2012 by Don McMillan.

It's an oldie but a goodie! Essentially Lesson 3.2 in one short, funny video - if he didn't do this video so well, it would have been the way I presented mine!

How body language shapes who you are.

Amy Cuddy is a renowned social psychologist famous for research on body language and non verbal communication - this video is specifically about how body language can change who you are. Powerful stuff.

What really happens when you try to take professional videos.

It's really not as simple as it appears when you see that 3 minute polished video. Here's an insight into what REALLY happens behind the scenes.

The power of demonstrating.

The power of demonstrating, not just explaining, as explained by one of my clients. My hope is that you too are learning about best practice teaching and learning techniques by experiencing them in this course.

7 Body language habits for effective leaders.

This video again, is powerful stuff. A short summary of body language for leaders, it's an interesting watch - even after all the years of studying this stuff I still learnt something new watching it!

2.0 Introduction

Introduction to Developing an Outcomes Based Curriculum

Why is it beneficial to be consistent when developing your curriculum and resources?

So many clients come to me in confusion and overwhelm because they have created so much content, but have no idea how it all fits together, no idea where anything is, their filing system is an endless rabbit warren of duplicate information and they've totally lost the love with it. All of it. All that hard work, and they've created themselves a monster. Don't do this to yourself.

Forget feeling overwhelmed, confused and out of your depth. Create a system that will keep you organised, and will give you a complete picture of your content, your resources and the marketing language you'll need to pitch it to your ideal clients.

Systems freak

What will you learn?

You will learn how to create, scaffold and organise outcomes based content, in a simple document that will keep you and your content creation on track, including the marketing language you'll need to help 'sell' the benefits of your content.

You'll get an overview of the module and why it's imperative to have a system by which to strategically plan, create, deliver and review your course content. Please note that you may have already seen these introductory materials on the course home page. If so, skip straight to Lesson 2.1 Outcomes based modules.

Please note that originally the FOUNDATIONS Level was an e-Course; therefore in the tutorials I may refer to Courses as 'Modules', and 'weeks' of the course, which refer to the 4 different Courses that are now housed in the FOUNDATIONS Level.

There is a Content and Task Planner mentioned in this Course.

There are now two versions of this Planner:

one is in WORD (for those who are more visual, like printing things out, and using pens and paper), and

one in EXCEL (for those of you who like having everything in one, solid, electronic place).

Please note this document is a generic planner that you may use in its entirety or only the columns that make sense for your learning experience.

Do not attempt to fill in this document until you have engaged with the content in this module as it can be extremely overwhelming before you understand the reason for each column. Adapt as necessary and please get in touch if you're unsure how to use it.

Supplementary Materials

Before you start on the journey of creating your content and task planner, please take the time to engage with these two supplementary materials. They were born from the VIP Client process that I use in helping people work through the stages of systemising their knowledge and expertise, and what happens when you don't follow this process (spoiler alert - DISASTER).

Why selling before you create can be a recipe for disaster.

Think carefully about taking business advise that will have you 'selling' access to a course, program or workshop before you've actually created it. Find out in this article, how some of my clients learnt the hard way.

6 Simple Steps to Systemising and Selling your Expertise

If you haven't already seen this tutorial, get on it before you start this module. It's a great way to start the curriculum development process, by brain dumping all your knowledge and working out what products and services you can create from it.

4.3 Reflection

With the lesson on:

4.3 Reflection

You will learn how to improve on any teaching and learning experience (good or bad) so that you get better every time you deliver content.

Welcome to the final section, of the final lesson in the course, REFLECTION!

This part of the Continuous Improvement course is only available to you once you've given feedback on the other three lessons on this course. To do this, engage with the learning materials in Lesson 4.1 Evaluation and Lesson 4.2 Review, then have a listen to the Interview with Guest Speaker Claire Richardson in Lesson 4.4. Once you've completed those, click on this link and once you've given your responses, you'll get automatic access to this lesson on Reflection.  If you've done other courses in the Library, feel free to leave feedback on those courses too!
