What educational products or services should you be delivering?

Are you seeing other professionals and organisations creating educational products or services like e-Courses, Workshops, online and face to face offerings and feeling a bit confused about what you should be delivering? Are you overwhelmed by all the choices?

Wouldn’t you prefer to be delivering a few signature products that light you up, bring home the bacon, and fit the exact needs of your clients?

I hear you. I learnt the hard way. I created a suite of options, nearly choked trying to deliver them all.

I wasn’t operating in my zone of genius, and I wasn’t doing things that I loved doing every day. I succumbed to the hype, and tried to do what everyone else was doing; namely a bunch of online options that just never really felt right.

So instead of trying to simultaneously write articles, do presentations, offer online tutorials, manage 2 Facebook groups, run online free to the public ’12 Day Challenges’ and a twice yearly e-Course, (oh and this is of course in all my ‘spare’ time, after doing consulting work and taking on coaching clients) AND run a small business, it’s much simpler now.

I do the things that light me up.

I write. I produce awesome lessons based on my experience and with the help of other like-minded professionals. I coach motivated clients to create first class quality learning materials and do some consulting and project management work when my clients just need the job DONE. I go through periods where I deliver a string of face to face presentations (or online webinars with live audiences) because I LOVE live training, but the majority of my work revolves around offering exemplary service to the professionals who I’m helping. My team now does all the rest of the stuff I have no desire to do (like sort out social media posts, create sales pages, do my bookkeeping and all those other delights that are NOT in my zone of genius).

My life is now, quite simply, really very simple.

Only took me a few years to work it out! So it doesn’t surprise me when clients come to me stressed out with all their options too, knowing they have great content but having NO IDEA what to do with it. It’s an easy trap to fall into. Sure, it’s important to create products that sell, that your clients need, and that solve a problem but one thing professionals often forget to think about, is WHAT ROLE THEY WANT TO PLAY.

educational products or services - Ro Gorell

Yes, there’s a myriad of options, so how do you choose the right educational product to create and deliver? You may resonate with one of my clients, Ro Gorell.

Ro came to me, with 20+ years of experience, thinking (after seeing all the hype online), she wanted to create an e-Course. When we sifted through her experience, worked out what she loved doing the most, and what would bring her the most joy on a day by day basis, her online ‘e-Course’ turned into a complete suite of face to face workshops marketable to three distinct target audiences with varying degrees of experience and learner needs.

So how do you choose the right educational product or service to create and deliver?

Here’s the magic formula…

Decide what YOU want to be doing with your time, then create your offerings around that.

Ask yourself, do you want to be:

  • playing the role of AUTHOR, FACILITATOR, COACH or CONSULTANT? In other words, are you writing, teaching, guiding or creating the finished product?
  • creating ONLINE or OFFLINE products or services? Keep in mind that books are not e-books, and face to face workshops are completely different to e-Courses…
  • creating SELF STUDY, GROUP STUDY or PERSONALISED products and services? They all have different ongoing time and energy commitments …
  • OR creating a combination of all of the above? Are you aware of the time and energy you’re committing and is that level sustainable for you and your life outside of work?

Know what you’re signing up for and make sure they’re the offerings that your clients actually want. After a year of struggling to deliver a suite of services, I rang 70 of my preferred clients and asked them what they actually wanted. Their answers blew me away.

Result? 80% of my offerings, shelved.

Anxiety levels? Reduced to almost naught.

Overall feelings of satisfaction with every day workload? Through the roof.

One of the resources in this lesson: do you know what product is best for you to deliver? Self study, group study or personalised options? Are you an author, facilitator, coach, consultant or a combination of all?

Ready to decide what offerings YOU should be creating and delivering?

I’ve prepared a short tutorial and a worksheet that outlines all your options when considering the types of products and services you can create from your expertise, and helps YOU choose the right educational product for you and your clients.

The lesson is available here.

It’s located in the BASICS Level of the Library, in the Starter Pack course:
